Training and knowledge in the following areas will be especially valued:

Responsibilities

The selected person will perform tasks related to the management and monitoring of the start-up portfolio linked to the institute.

Will support the costing of the institute’s services, as well as their valorization (budgeting, follow-up, marketing, etc.). He/she will also provide support in the preparation of contracts of valorization (commercial or partnership).

Will receive and handle requests from internal and external clients (primarily in Spanish and occasionally in English), and will interact with other corporate counterparts (both national and international), institutional entities, and other organizations and agencies.

Will collaborate with the filing of documentation and the preparation of reports related to the tasks detailed above, and will provide general support in tasks of their competence, among other responsibilities.

Other requirements

In addition to the required training, we are looking for a proactive person, with analytical and attention to detail mentality, methodical and logical approach, with good interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills.

The Chronic Lymphoid Leukemia Research Laboratory (iLLC) of the Institut Pasteur of Montevideo is calling for applications for a postdoctoral researcher, 40 hours per week.

Qualifications:

A PhD degree by the time of appointment.

Experience

Previous knowledge in cellular and molecular biology, immune techniques as flow cytometry, Western Blot and ELISA and handling murine models, will be considered advantageous but not exclusive. Experience in the fields of immunology and hemato-oncology is also desirable.

Responsibilities

The selected candidate will lead a project directed by Dr. Pablo Oppezo, in the rLLC laboratory in collaboration with Glaxo Smith Kline (GSK) Technology and Science platform in the field of Immuno-oncology. The project will focus on understanding the molecular mechanisms of progression and therapeutic resistance in chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

The main techniques used will be flow cytometry, ELISA, confocal microscopy, quantitative PCR, and next generation sequencing. The development of the proposed project will be the primary activity of the applicant, requiring a high level of dedication to this task.

Reference Salary:

As of September 2024, the nominal salary for the postdoc position is 110,490 Uruguayan pesos, (2800 USD).

It is expected that results will be announced before November 6, 2024, although this depends on the number of applicants and the characteristics of the applications.

Duration

The position will last for 2 years, with the possibility of extending the position for a period of up to 18 or 24 months, through competitive funding.

The Institut Pasteur de Montevideo is looking to expand its scientific team through an open call for two postdoctoral researchers to develop research projects aligned with current institutional scientific priorities (no prior affiliation with the institute required).

Training attained

Candidates must have completed their PhD between 2019 and March 31, 2025. While this is the preferred profile, applications that do not strictly meet these criteria but are adequately justified will also be considered. For candidates who have experienced maternity, an additional year will be accepted for the PhD completion (2018) per child born or adopted after obtaining the doctorate, and up to 2 additional years (2017) for multiple children born or adopted after obtaining the doctorate. Other justified circumstances such as illnesses or caregiving responsibilities will also be considered.

Duration

The position is for a duration of 2 years, potentially renewable once for up to 18 months. In the case of maternity during the contract period, deadlines will be extended by 9 months.

Salary reference

As of July 2024, the nominal salary for the postdoctoral position at IP Montevideo is $110,490 Uruguayan pesos.

Responsibilities

The activities to be developed will be carried out within the framework of the INIA-FPTA project “Study of infectious causes and genetic factors associated with gestation losses in beef cattle in Uruguay”.

The main objectives of this project are (i) to study infectious diseases caused by bacteria, parasites and/or viruses and determine their association with reproductive losses in beef cattle in Uruguay at different stages of gestation; and (ii) detect known genetic and/or hereditary diseases and identify genetic components associated with losses in beef cattle in Uruguay.

The selected person will develop laboratory activities and among the responsibilities are the following:

– Process and analyze different biological samples obtained from animals with gestational losses by microbiological bacterial culture techniques, serological analysis of antibodies induced by infection (ELISA and bacterial antigen agglutination methods), extraction, purification and detection of pathogen DNA by conventional and real time PCR.

– Record and analyze analysis results together with the working group.

– Maintain and update a bank of biological samples obtained/analyzed (serum, nucleic acids, etc.) and microorganisms isolated during the execution of project activities.

Given that part of the project activities involve collaborative work at INIA experimental stations, it is requested to indicate the possibility of short stays at the Animal Health Research Platform in La Estanzuela, department of Colonia (this requirement is not exclusive).

The graduate thesis will be carried out within the framework of a research line that uses multi-omics data and artificial intelligence to predict gene functions. The selected person will work with Dr. Flavio Pazos Obregón and Dr. Rosario Durán and will join the project “Identification of new components of the divisome and elongasome of Corynebacteriales using spatial proteomics, gene location patterns and artificial intelligence”. During the thesis work, machine learning models capable of predicting gene functions will be implemented, using public domain multiomics data and data obtained by our Unit.

The internship will be, in principle, honorary, although depending on the progress of the project, funding will be sought. The nature of the work enables a semi-face-to-face regime.

The duration of the internship will be 12 months.

Training attained

We are looking for interested people who are able to enroll in a PhD program and are interested in doing their thesis in the field of Biomedicine/Biotechnology. It is a requirement to have completed a Master’s degree, or accredit equivalent training, in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Human Biology, Biotechnology, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, or related areas. Special cases may be considered of people who are not yet able to enter the Doctorate, but are able to enter a Master’s program (for guidance, please refer to the requirements of the PEDECIBA or PROINBIO doctorate).

 

Experience

Knowledge and interest in neurosciences, biochemistry, cellular-developmental biology, biotechnology, microscopy, as well as experience in some of the methodological techniques to be applied during the project and described in this call will be valued, but not exclusive.

 

Responsibilities

The PhD thesis will be carried out in the framework of the ANII-funded project: “SCiMeR: an innovative platform for in vivo and single cell level preclinical evaluation of molecules modulating metabolic reprogramming” (FMV 1_2023_1_176623). The project aims to develop new methods for in vivo analysis of cell behavior and physiology, focusing on metabolic changes in immune and microglial cells.

The selected person will have the opportunity to:

● research using advanced microscopy technology unique in the country and the region, with the direct objective of applying the knowledge acquired to the preclinical evaluation of drugs.

● be part of a dynamic, interdisciplinary and collaborative working group, with extensive experience in the subject matter of work.

● given the applied nature of the project, you will have contact with companies, all of which will provide an enriching training experience in multiple areas.

 

Some of the main techniques to be used during the project will be:

● Cell and tissue cultivation.

● Basic molecular biology and biochemistry techniques.

Use and manipulation of laboratory animals, mainly zebrafish embryos.

Advanced Fluorescence Optical Microscopy techniques including: Immunolocalization and 3D reconstruction, in vivo imaging with microscopy.
2-photon confocal laser, Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging (FLIM), hyperspectral microscopy and Light-sheet Microscopy.

Image analysis and statistical data processing.

 

Remuneration

The selected person will receive support for the completion of the doctorate through an ANII postgraduate scholarship associated with the project.

 

Duration

The project will start on May 1, 2024 and the ANII project financing will have a duration of 36 months.

The selected person will develop his/her activities in the Joint Udelar- Institut Pasteur Unit of Advanced Bioimaging (based at the Hospital de Clínicas and the Institut Pasteur de Montevideo) and will eventually carry out stay(s) in centers abroad.

Within the ANII project “Molecular mechanisms of vertical transmission in Chagas disease”, there is an opportunity to carry out a PhD thesis. This involves working on the project objectives and also exploring additional questions about the molecular basis of transplacental transmission of pathogens.

The selected person will be responsible for investigating the modulation of gene expression and host immune response as a means of persistence and vertical transmission. Molecular and cellular biology techniques will be used, as well as massive sequencing, bioinformatics and work with animal models.

In addition to these tasks, the student will be able to develop his/her thesis within a collaborative work group and with experience in the topic of work, thus providing an enriching and formative experience.

The Bioinformatic Unit and the Pasteur+INIA Joint Unit (UMPI) of the Institut Pasteur de Montevideo are calling for applicants to carry out their PhD thesis with an hourly load of 30 hours per week.

Training attained

We are looking for people interested in doing their PhD thesis, who have already completed their Master’s thesis in Biological Sciences or Bioinformatics.

Experience

Experience in the areas of microbiology, molecular biology, genetics or genomics will be valued. You are encouraged not to refrain from applying if you do not possess some of the skills or mastery of the above mentioned areas or techniques.

The PhD thesis will be carried out within the framework of the INIA-FPTA project “From gut to water through soil and vice versa: discovering the dissemination pathways of livestock-associated microbial communities”.

This project will investigate the role of the gut microbiome in animal health, as well as the interactions of microorganism communities at the environment-animal-human interface by seeking to characterize the different pathways of microbial dispersal. In this scenario of environment-human-animal interactions, the project also emphasizes the identification of antimicrobial resistance genes, as well as understanding their distribution and dynamics.

The selected person will develop activities that include the use of bioinformatics and statistical tools to analyze shotgun metagenomics and amplicon sequencing data (i.e. 16S, 18S), as well as molecular biology aspects for nucleic acid extraction, construction of second (i.e. Illumina) and third (i.e. Oxford Nanopore) generation sequencing libraries.

Responsibilities include:

  • Participation in the processing of samples in the laboratory: extraction of nucleic acids, construction of sequencing libraries.
  • Participation in sample sequencing using Oxford Nanopore technology.
  • Analyzing sequencing data together with the working group.
  • Writing, together with the working group, of scientific articles for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Participate in the drafting of semi-annual project reports.

Remuneration

The selected person will receive support for the completion of the doctorate through an ANII postgraduate scholarship associated with the project, which will take effect immediately.

Duration

The position is highly dedicated. Its term will be until November 30, 2026.
