This committee is responsible for ensuring compliance with, and enforcing, the legal regulations applicable to the use of animals in experimentation, teaching, and scientific research. It is also tasked with reviewing procedures involving experimentation, teaching, and research to be carried out at the institution, in order to advise on and determine their compatibility and feasibility in accordance with current legislation.

The committee keeps a record of all experimentation, teaching, and research procedures involving animals conducted at the institution it advises, ensures the record is kept up to date, and submits it annually to the National Animal Experimentation Commission (CNEA).

It also maintains and updates a registry of personnel accredited by the CNEA for conducting animal procedures in experimentation, teaching, and research at the institution. The committee promotes the national accreditation system among personnel involved in such procedures and issues, within the scope of its authority, the certificates required for submission to research funding bodies, scientific journals, or other relevant entities.

In addition, the committee is authorized to order the suspension of any experimentation, teaching, or research activity if a violation of legal provisions is identified, and such activity shall remain suspended until the issue is resolved, without prejudice to the application of other sanctions.
