Medical Genomics
The objective of the Medical Genomics program is to combine and enhance the capacities of different laboratories and units of the institute in an area of growing scientific interest that links genetics tools and knowledge with its clinical application.
Since the DNA structure was decoded, andgene functions and mutation were linked to human diseases development, genetic research applied to medicine has gained ground in public health policies.
The advances in sequencing techniques has promoted the development of medical genomics and has led to the inclusion of new knowledge in clinical practice.
In this line, at the IP Montevideo, there are several groups that are using genomic techniques and are involved with this programme. These groups are the IP Montevideo’s Bioinformatics Unit, Host-Pathogen Interactions Laboratory and Functional Genomics Laboratory.
