Call 19-22: student to do degree thesis – Microbial Genomics Laboratory – IP Montevideo

The Microbial Genomics Laboratory of the Institut Pasteur de Montevideo is calling for students to carry out their degree thesis, with a timetable to be agreed. Those close to graduation and looking for research experience will also be considered. In the latter case, special consideration will be given to interest in joining the laboratory as a postgraduate student. For both situations, the selected person is expected to join the laboratory in the first half of 2023.

Training accomplished

We are looking for advanced students or recent graduates in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry (Faculty of Sciences), Chemical Sciences or Clinical Biochemistry (Faculty of Chemistry), Biotechnology Engineering (ORT University), or similar training.

Experience

No previous experience is required for undergraduate students.

Direct experience in molecular biology techniques, microbiology, recombinant protein production, among others, as well as knowledge of bioinformatics will be an asset for graduates or those in the process of completing their degree training.

Responsibilities

The work will be carried out in the framework of the project Functional metagenomics applied to the discovery of new enzymes. The successful candidate will carry out experimental activities involving mainly molecular biology and microbiology techniques. Namely: obtaining DNA from bacteria, generation of plasmid libraries, plasmid characterisation and sequencing by NGS, engineering of Escherichia coli genomes (homologous recombination, CRISPR) as well as conventional microbiology techniques, plate assays, microplate assays, activity assays, etc.

Duration

The undergraduate internship will last between 6 and 12 months of part-time work, depending on the degree course to which it corresponds.

For graduates or those in the process of completing their undergraduate studies, joining the laboratory is subject to agreement on a work project and academic training prospects. In these cases, remuneration is foreseen according to their level of training and workload, based on our salary scale, available at the following link, as well as the team’s commitment to work together and support the application for national scholarships in the next call for applications.
